Winter Storm Warning Issued as Rare June Snow Falls Across Three U.S. States

Late June is usually associated with summer vacations, rising temperatures, and outdoor activities—not snowstorms. Yet a rare Winter Storm Warning surprised residents and visitors across parts of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming as heavy snowfall blanketed higher elevations, including sections of Yellowstone National Park.
The unusual weather event unfolded while much of the eastern United States continued to experience dangerous heat, creating one of the most dramatic weather contrasts seen this year.
Winter Storm Warning Issued for Three Western States
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for mountainous regions across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, primarily affecting elevations above 6,500 feet.
Forecasters warned that several inches of heavy, wet snow could accumulate through the weekend, making travel difficult in higher elevations and creating hazardous conditions for hikers, campers, and backcountry visitors.
Some locations were expected to receive between four and eight inches of snow, while the highest mountain peaks could see up to one foot of accumulation.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning covered higher elevations across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
Yellowstone National Park Sees Rare June Snowfall
Visitors to Yellowstone National Park were greeted with scenes more typical of winter than summer.
Weather forecasts called for snow showers mixed with rain, along with isolated thunderstorms throughout the day. Some higher elevations inside the park were expected to receive up to six inches of snowfall.
Although snow occasionally falls in Yellowstone during late spring and early summer because of its elevation, meteorologists say receiving an official Winter Storm Warning in late June remains highly unusual.
What Caused the Rare Winter Storm Warning?
Meteorologists say the unexpected weather was triggered by a deep upper-level trough moving south across the Rocky Mountains and the Intermountain West.
This weather system pulled an unusually cold air mass into the region, causing temperatures to fall 15 to 20 degrees below seasonal averages across parts of the Northwest.
The sharp drop in temperatures created ideal conditions for snowfall at higher elevations, despite the calendar showing the start of summer.

While mountain snow is not impossible during June, official Winter Storm Warning alerts this late in the season are uncommon.
According to weather experts, Montana typically receives only one June Winter Storm Warning in many years, while Idaho has issued very few similar alerts over the past several seasons.
In eastern Idaho, local officials described the event as a dramatic swing from summer warmth back to winter-like conditions. Some communities also approached decades-old cold temperature records during the weather system.
Strong winds reaching nearly 30 mph combined with heavy, wet snow to increase the risk of fallen trees and blocked mountain roads.
Eastern U.S. Faces Extreme Heat at the Same Time
One of the most remarkable aspects of this weather event is that it occurred while millions of Americans in the eastern United States dealt with dangerous heat.
Heat index values climbed well above 100 degrees in several states, with some forecasts predicting temperatures that felt as high as 115 degrees.
The simultaneous occurrence of a Winter Storm Warning in the West and record-breaking heat across the East highlights the dramatic weather differences that can occur across the United States during transitional weather patterns.
Weather Officials Urge Travelers to Stay Alert
The National Weather Service advised anyone traveling through affected mountain areas to monitor the latest forecasts before heading out.
Heavy snow, reduced visibility, slippery roads, and falling tree branches remained possible throughout the warning period, especially in remote mountain locations.
Officials also reminded visitors to Yellowstone National Park and nearby recreational areas that weather conditions can change rapidly at higher elevations, even during the summer months.
As temperatures gradually recover this week, the unusual June snowstorm will likely be remembered as one of the rarest Winter Storm Warning events to occur during the start of summer.
