Quincy, Illinois (KHQA) — Quincy’s Sports Commission is making progress toward improving the city’s sports landscape.

The commission reviewed seven land proposals for a potential indoor sports complex during a meeting Tuesday night and ultimately voted to move forward with a plan at 48th Street and Maine as the most viable option at this time.

GREDF President Kyle Moore said the vote represents only a small step in the overall process.

“It doesn’t mean that a sports facility is necessarily built there or that a sports facility is going to be built,” Moore said. “It allows the city to continue to do due diligence, and that means if you’re going to learn how much it costs, you need to know how much it costs to construct the facility. Well, then you need to know what site it’s going to be on so you can know if there’s certain site preparations that need to be made and what are those costs.”

The commission also learned it will receive $5,000 to bring in assistance to refine last year’s feasibility study.

Commission Chair David Adam said having a location in mind brings the project closer to becoming a reality.

“It helps us know where we’re going to go. We know the land that we have available. We have a location. We already know who we’re partnering with,” Adam said. “We’ve learned that this is going to be a slow, tedious process, so we have to sort of take these little victories as best as we can.”

The goal is to bring the land proposal to the Quincy City Council for a vote, but that will not happen until the feasibility study is refined with a clearer understanding of project costs.
